The railroad is ever expanding and more important than ever. As the supply chain grows so does the demand for more efficient means of transport. None are more sound than rail. Utah has deep roots with this integral sector. Since 1869 our state has been a vital connection and hub for the movement of products and resources. In this brief article we will discuss the importance and history of the railroad in Utah. Hopefully it gives you some fun facts and appreciation for this amazing means of transport in every way.
Brigham Young realized the importance of accepting Union Pacific and Central Pacific’s proposals for a rail connection in Salt Lake City. As the railroad became more integral for the future of industry the build was necessary. The first steam engine was established in 1830 in South Carolina. By 1860 there was over 30000 miles of track throughout the country. The future of states economic power depended on this efficient means of transport. Demand for a transcontinental route began in the 1840s and took 17 years to begin. The Pacific Railway Act was signed by Abraham Lincoln and connection started.
The west was formally isolated. But the addition of trains made this part of the country accessible. Not only did it begin to tie the country together following the civil war, but it also further shaped Utah as a community oriented state. Union Pacific became the largest railroad company in the territory and the state’s economy boomed. The Mormon church used the ease of the rail to bring members from across the globe to the state. Then in later years the rail became the reason for the success of Utah’s mining industry. Utah Railway was established in 1917 and the amount of coal moving across the state was massive.
Utah is a railroad state. The establishment of the Wasatch Front as we know it is due entirely to trains. The importance of the rail cannot be understated. It’s likely that Utah sets records for rail traffic yearly due to the continued demand and utilization of this means of transportation. Railroads are irreplaceable as a means of connection for our supply chain. Railroads account for nearly 40% of all long distance freight cargo moved. They are by far the most fuel efficient means of transport and are nearly four times more efficient than trucks. Railroads and their employees cannot be overlooked in any way. We need them. Salt Lake City was and continues to be shaped by this industry.
